Don't be afraid to build with other PMMs

It might be the greatest decision you ever make

We’re here to build, together.

I have a strange question for my PMMs out there.

How many of us are teaming up to build something cool?

FletchPMM comes to mind. And a couple of agencies like Olivine and Fluvio.

But the reality is that most of us aren’t building with our tribe. And it’s costing your reputation and your bank account.

Ready for the good news? I’m going to encourage you to find a squad and build something cool together.

Ready? Let’s get after it!

A Note That We Wrote (for our Sponsor)

Did you know the average Navattic customer uses demos for ~5 use cases?

Let’s get real—one boring 'overview demo' on your homepage isn’t cutting it. If you’re not using interactive demos to level up your content, campaigns, and outreach, you’re leaving money on the table. Period.

Navattic just released their State of the Interactive Demo Report—Year 3, baby. We’re talking insights from over 300 users and a deep dive into the top 1% of demos on their platform.

Want to know how the best are crushing it with interactive demos?
Go read the report or you could end up dead inside…like us.

🚂 Your dream team is waiting for you

Let’s think of the prototypical PMM.

We’re good planners. We think critically. And we appreciate research.

But we also get shit done. We fix things. And of course…we like to experiment.

PMMs are the perfect blend of vision and execution.

Yes you are. You really, really are.

But do you know what I find strange?

A lot of us (myself included) are terrified to do something on our own. And it’s probably for good reason:

  • How will I get the work done?

  • What’s my offer going to be?

  • What’s my differentiation?

  • What should I charge?

It sucks feeling like you’re alone. Doesn’t matter if you’re in house or a solopreneur.

No one ever died from a crushed dream………….

That’s why I co-founded We’re Not Marketers with Zach Roberts and Gab Bujold.

It’s the same reason I co-founded DemoDash with the godfather of PMM, Jason Oakley.

So I won’t say this is perfect advice, but take it from a guy who’s been there twice (hehe that rhymed)

DON’T DO THIS SHIT BY YOURSELF.

This is what it looks like when figuring out your solo offer

You’re probably thinking “that’s great Eric, but I need something tactical.”

Well…you’re in luck because I don’t write puff pieces for our loyal fans at Dying 4 Influence.

So one more meme before we get to the tactical and practical bits.

The ultimate crossover doesn’t exis…

1) Figure out your passion

Like anything you do, it’s important that you love it. So the first piece on your chess board HAS to be the things that get you out of bed in the morning.

For We’re Not Marketers, it was helping Product Marketing rise about slide decks, one pagers, and being misunderstood.

For DemoDash, it was my disdain for the common B2B buying journey and my belief that interactive demos solve a bajillion problems.

2) Find those like-minded souls

Now that you know what you want to do, it’s time to go find others who want to do it to.

For We’re Not Marketers, it was a little bit of luck and a lot of networking. I spent weeks sharing my POV about a million topics, while simultaneously courting Gab with random comments like “BOOOST.” The awareness meant two things: “I know what he’s into” and “he’s clearly into me.”

For DemoDash, it was a bit more of calculated luck. I scheduled a call with Jason to catch up. My plan was to get his thoughts on a new agency for building Demo Centers. To my luck, he shared that he wanted to niche down and focus on interactive demos too. We both had concerns about doing things on our own and from that moment…we were in business.

3) Spend time on positioning…and test it

When you’re working with PMMs, you don’t need to convince them that positioning is important. It’s what we do. And now it your opportunity to do it the right way.

I won’t spend too much time on telling you how to position, because that’s on you. But whatever you do, differentiate as much as you can.

We’re Not Marketers use an extreme POV to draw an audience and sponsors. We tested that on LinkedIn post that went viral.
DemoDash focuses on a niche segment of people who want to use Navattic for interactive demos. We tested that on some pre-launch clients to verify our position.

So there we go. You now have the secret to teaming up with other PMMs.

So I better see 50 new PMM team-ups this year, or else I’ll have to admit that no one liked this edition of the newsletter.
