Differentiate as a PMM with your superpower
And find what it takes to find (and use) it.
Off to kick some serious ASS
The role of product marketing is BOOMING. š£
But āmore boomingā might mean more fierce competition you must face.
To find a new role, or to have a healthy client pipeline (if youāre a fractional PMM).
Like wearing multiple hats, skill-building matters in product marketing. We (PMMs) talk about it, a lot.
But how often do we pause and ask:
āWhat makes me uniquely valuable in my role?ā
Itās time to get real about what sets you apart.
This positioning is now about you.
Hereās how to do it
Welcome to the next episode of Dying 4 Influence. The weekly newsletter for misunderstood B2B product marketers.

How to Find and Own Your Superpower š¦¹āāļø
Ok so, just to talk in terms that we all understand.
Problem: The product marketing industry is growing, but becoming more crowded and harder to differentiate.
Solution: By positioning ourselves strategically and differentiating as in-house, job seeker, or fractional PMM.
Benefit: Niche down your expertise in a way that makes you look more desirable to work with as a PMM, especially with the broad nature of the role.
So now, let me ask you a question š
shittier superpower than creating one-pagers if you ask me
What is your edge as a PMM? For some, itās bridging the gap between sales and marketing.
For others, itās crafting killer messaging that makes competitors look like amateurs.
But how do you figure it out?
Here are some tips inspired by our latest podcast episode:
Reflect on Your Wins:
Write down your proudest projects. Identify trends in what you enjoyed most and where you delivered the biggest impact.Try It All:
You might think your strength is sales enablement until you try messaging, product launches, or pricing strategies. Experiment to discover what truly resonates with you.Get Feedback:
Talk to colleagues, mentors, or peers. What strengths do they see in you that you might overlook?Transferable Skills Are Gold:
If youāve never done a product launch, think about similar experiencesāevents youāve organized, campaigns youāve executed, or even hobbies that demonstrate key skills.Map Your Energy:
On Friday, take 30 minutes to review your week. What tasks gave you energy, and what drained you? Align your career with the work that excites you.Sharpen the Saw:
Focus on the skills that make the biggest difference. Donāt try to do it allāfocus on what makes you exceptional and build around it.
Remember: every PMM comes in with a unique perspective and background.
Thatās your differentiator. Own it proudly š
For better or worse
Hereās a quick example of how Iām doing it for myself as a solopreneur:
Spent almost a decade within marketing, mainly as a growth and product marketing, most in B2B SaaS (Experience = What have I done?)
Was always great at writing, and spent a lot of time reading in English, even as my 2nd language (Foundation = What am I good at?)
Wrote 260+ emails and LinkedIn DM templates for 30+ B2B SaaS (Milestone = What win can I show to prove my foundation?)
Struggled a lot with messaging and positioning the 4 times I was a startup solo marketer (Character = What have I struggled with before?)
So if you take: my background in marketing, running campaigns, struggling with messaging with early-stage tech startups trying to market to North America (Experience + Milestone + Character)
My superpower would be: Messaging testing and writing about message-market fit
Try it out for yourself, and send us your example š
